Spring is finally here, and you know that means it’s time for some serious spring cleaning. Dust out the cobwebs in your website by checking that all images have an ALT tag, and you have a title tag and meta description for each web page. Let’s dive into 4 ways you can enhance your website’s SEO with a bit of spring cleaning.

1. Review the success of your content themes

When you started creating content for your website, you carefully considered which topics and categories of content would most appeal to your audience. Starting out, you may have only had some well-researched assumptions for which topics to choose, rather than solid data to pull insights from.

Now that you’ve been developing content for some time, it’s important to revisit your content themes and measure their success with the data they’ve created to better enhance your websites SEO.

We can often be swayed by our own bias of what we personally want to write or read about, rather than what our audience is looking for. Consider organic search traffic, click-through rates, shares, comments and the like. If you’re noticing a trend in a certain topic not performing well, it may be time to drop that content theme from your overall website marketing strategy.

2. Revise your SEO target keywords

SEO-rich target keywords change and shift based on the activity of other users on the internet. If you have a list of go-to SEO words, it’s time to revisit that list and make sure that the keywords are still high-performing. You can do your own SEO keyword audit with this guide from SEO expert Neil Patel.

You may also see a link between low-performing topics and low-performing keywords in this analysis. That’s often a good indication that either one or both of the elements simply aren’t working or resonating with your readers. Carefully consider this data and act accordingly to enhance your website’s SEO.

3. Double-check your website’s load speed

If your website is being regularly updated with new content, it could be getting bogged down with new data which negatively affects the loading speed of your website. Better loading speed is just one of the factors that play into enhanced website SEO. The fact of the matter is that if your website takes longer to load, visitors will click away.

You can use free tools like Pingdom to test out your site speed and get a comprehensive report of how you can further enhance your website’s loading speed. You will be given grades, percentages of how your content is distributed throughout the website and other information to provide a clear idea of where there might be some issues with your website’s speed and how you can start fixing those issues.

4. Ensure you have no duplicate content to enhance your website’s SEO

What is duplicate content? Google defines it as:

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely matches other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

  • Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
  • Store items are shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
  • Printer-only versions of web pages

Why does this matter? Well, duplicate content is considered to be of lesser quality and does not rank as well for SEO. When your website is scanned for SEO purposes, duplicate content will notify the search engines and ding you for what it considers as unoriginal and thus less valuable content.

To immediately clean up the bulk of this problem and enhance your website’s SEO, review your website copy to ensure that you’re not copying and pasting the same text in multiple places.

Good SEO practices keep your website clean and running smoothly

We recommend you work to enhance your website’s SEO at least several times per year. This will help you stay on top of your website’s overall health, and ensure that you are putting your best online foot forward for your target audience to find you and benefit from your offering.
